Description安政4年4月、大坂、角の芝居「仮名手本忠臣蔵(かなでほんちゅうしんぐら)」七段目「一力茶屋(いちりきじゃや)」の場。敵を油断させるために元塩冶(えんや)の国家老大星由良之助(おおぼしゆらのすけ)は、茶屋で放蕩を尽くしていたが、そこを尋ねた足軽の平右衛門は、顔世御前(かおよごぜん)からの密書を見てしまった妹お軽を、仇討ちの秘密厳守のために殺そうとする。刀のまわりを舞う白い紙は、切りかけられたお軽が咄嗟に兄に投げた懐紙(かいし)。 -- 武藤 純子K

NOTES:
[1] Much of Bigelow's collection of Asian art was formed during his residence in Japan between 1882 and 1889, although he also made acquisitions in Europe and the United States. Bigelow deposited many of these objects at the MFA in 1890 before donating them to the Museum's collection at later dates.
