万延1年(=安政7年)1月、大坂、中の芝居、前狂言「けいせい百千鳥(ももちどり)」。暖簾には坂東彦三郎の屋号「音羽屋(おとわや)」俳名「薪水(しんすい)」、実川延三郎の屋号「井筒屋(いずつや)」俳名「延若(えんじゃく)」、嵐璃寛の屋号「はむらや」俳名「璃寛(りかん)」などの文字の一部がみえる。嵐璃寛は立役(たちやく)、女方(おんながた)ともに演じたが、女方の方が好まれた。 -- 武藤 純子K

NOTES:
[1] Much of Bigelow's collection of Asian art was formed during his residence in Japan between 1882 and 1889, although he also made acquisitions in Europe and the United States. Bigelow deposited many of these objects at the MFA in 1890 before donating them to the Museum's collection at later dates.
