能の「三番叟」を移した儀式的歌舞伎舞踊。文久2年頃制作された見立の寿式三番叟。天下泰平(てんかたいへい)、五穀豊穣(ごこくほうじょう)、芝居繁盛(しばいはんじょう)を祈願する。顔見世(かおみせ)や正月に、座元(ざもと)関係者や座頭(ざがしら)らが演じることが多かった。 -- 武藤 純子K

[1] Much of Bigelow's collection of Asian art was formed during his residence in Japan between 1882 and 1889, although he also made acquisitions in Europe and the United States. Bigelow deposited many of these objects at the MFA in 1890 before donating them to the Museum's collection at later dates.
