Description慶応1年3月、大坂、筑後芝居「本朝廿四孝(ほんちょうにじゅうしこう)」。五代大谷友右衛門が横蔵を演じているが、前名の友松の時代なので、改名以前の制作ということになる。場面は三段目にあたる「筍(たけのこ)掘り」の場。軍学者山本勘助(やまもとかんすけ)の長男横蔵は、母に雪中の筍を掘れと謎かけられた次男慈悲蔵(じひぞう)と争う。「見立いろはたとへ」と題されたシリーズの1図。 -- 武藤 純子K

NOTES:
[1] Much of Bigelow's collection of Asian art was formed during his residence in Japan between 1882 and 1889, although he also made acquisitions in Europe and the United States. Bigelow deposited many of these objects at the MFA in 1890 before donating them to the Museum's collection at later dates.
