DescriptionMourning brooch, gold setting, scene of woman standing next to plinth with two urns inscribed WM and TM, raising her arms to two cherubs in the clouds. Case by Parry & Musgrave, goldsmiths, Philadelphia. Hair work by "J. Boone, hair worker", Philadelphia. The mother shown is Ruth McConnell of Huntington, Pennsylvania.
InscriptionsOn back of case: "In Memory of / T. M. McC. / Aged six years & three months / and / W. H. McC. / aged 2 years & 10 months" with bright-cut border. Inscribed inside back case cover: "Made by Parry & Musgrave, Philadelphia, Sept. 13th, 1792." Backing the ivory panel is the partial label of "J. Boone, hair worker, 33 South St., Philada."
ProvenanceUnknown date, found in central Pennsylvania; to Paul Madden, Nantucket, Massachusetts; 1984, sold at Skinner Auctions, Bolton, Massachusetts (October 26, 1984, sale 1000, lot 240) and purchased by antiques dealer Stephen Score, Essex, Massachusetts; purchased from Score by Daphne Farago, Little Compton, Rhode Island; 2006, gift of Daphne Farago to the MFA (Accession date: January 25, 2006).
