DescriptionOval form with stylized hand; palm: blue ovoid in shape with small black ovoid within. Thumb and fingers are black against a blue ground. Wood color outlining appears between blue and black elements. Red banding around oval on sides of rattle. Painting on both sides of rattle. Handle is carved extension of the oval form. Two halves are secured together with gut ties and by an overlap joint.
ProvenanceSaid to have been sold from the collection of an English country house to an unknown dealer, England; sold by this dealer to Taylor A. Dale, London [see note]; 1981, sold by Taylor Dale to William E. Channing and Co., Santa Fe, NM; 1996, sold by William E. Channing and Co. to the MFA. (Accession Date: March 27, 1996)
