Timothy Philbrick's gracefully proportioned settee indicates the love he had for historic American furniture. His interest was particularly in delicate and masterful approaches to joints, tapers, and curves, as well as an appreciation for careful symmetry. He indulged this passion by frequently visiting MFA Boston's galleries while he was a student at Boston University's Program in Artisanry during the late 1970s. This bench is now part of the Museum's Please Be Seated program for visitors to use and enjoy, and part of the very museum collection that influenced his practice from the start.
