This cupboard base belongs to a small group of related furniture attributed to the same, unidentified maker because of similar carved details and original paint schemes. Unusual construction features may indicate that the craftsman was not a full-time furniture maker but rather, like most rural artisans, also a house carpenter or joiner and probably a seasonal farmer.
ProvenanceAccording to family tradition, originally owned by Henry Baldwin (born Devonshire, England; died Woburn, Massachusetts, 1698), who married Phoebe Richardson of Woburn, in 1649; 1698, by descent to Phoebe, who married an Englishman named Jones; by descent to Mary Baldwin, who married Abner Bailey (died March 19, 1799, aged ninety years old) of Salem, New Hampshire; by descent to their daughter, Elizabeth, who married Henry Little of Newbury, Massachusetts; by descent to their daughter, Jane, who married Joseph W. Page; by descent to their daughter, Lucretia (d. 1902, aged 92 years); Lucretia married "Mayor of Haverhill, Massachusetts"; after his death, Lucretia and her daughter, Ellen (d. 1901), lived in Northfield, Massachusetts, and later in Boston; by descent to Edwin John Little Page, who married Edna Blanche Richardson of Boston, and later moved to Sherbrooke, Province of Quebec; in Sherbrooke, the chest "passed through a fire in 1906, being scorched on the top, but not otherwise damaged"; by descent to Edwin Warren Little Page, nephew of Edwin J.L. Page, who married Olive Clifford Webster of Needham; 1978, inherited by Virginia Page Anthony from Mr. and Mrs. Edwin W.L. Page; 1990, given by Virginia Page Anthony to the Museum (Accession Date June 27, 1990)
