First edition of this influential treatise. In addition to the letterpress title page, there are two additional engraved titles. Join-Lambert and Préaud (see Bibliography) specify further French eds. of 1664, 1701 [two eds., by Emery, and Aubouin and Clousier], 1710, 1745 [Jombert, with added text by Cochin fils], 1758 [also Jombert, augmented with mezzotint, crayon manner, and "celle qui imite le lavis" and construction of "presses modernes"]; English ed. of 1662; Dutch ed. of 1662; German eds. of (Nuremberg) 1652, 1745, 1751, (Dresden) 1765; Portuguese ed. of 1801.

NOTE:
Koehler was the first Print Curator at the MFA and served from 1887 until his death in 1900. He deposited the majority of his collection at the MFA in 1895-1896. The gift of Koehler's collection was accepted by the Trustees of the MFA on October 20, 1898.
