Architectonic case furniture with applied, geometric moldings is characteristic of objects made in a cabinetmaking tradition established by members of the Symonds family. The shop was established by John Symonds, who came to Salem in 1636 from Great Yarmouth, England. This chest probably was made by one of his sons, who carried on the shop tradition.
