ProvenanceDescended in the family of Captain Samuel Rea (1782-1842) of Salem, Massachusetts, to his namesake Samuel Rea (d. 1938). The possible line of descent begins with the likely original owner Daniel Rea (1654-1714/15) of Danvers; by descent to his son, Uzziel Rea (1693-1754); to his son Archelaeus Rea (1731-1819) of Danvers and Topsfield; to his son Archaelus; and in turn to his son, the aforementioned Samuel. March 31, 1985, sold by Ronald Rosenbleeth, Inc., auction, Concord, New Hampshire to the MFA. (Accession date: April 24, 1985)
