The maker of this chest created its design with moldings, applied spindles with urn-and-reel turnings, bosses (applied oval ornaments), and other decoration. Differences in color were obtained through the use of red cedar for the moldings, black walnut for the applied plaques, and maple turnings painted black, in imitation of ebony. The result is a tightly organized, highly complex, and vibrant facade based on late-Renaissance sources for classical architectural designs.
