DescriptionA six-board box with a till, carved on the front panel with palmettes separated by S-scrolls. The corners of the front and top are gouged with quarter-round notches, emphasized by crescent punching, while the palmettes and scrolls are deeply punched wih circles. The entire box, with the exception of the back, was stained red, and the carved palmettes were painted a brighter red. A wash of black, now dark brown in tone, was used over the red on the S-scrolls and on the lip of the base. The staple hinges and keyhole escutcheon are original. The lock and catch are lacking.
The lid, the bottom, and the till lid are white pine; all other parts are oak. The right cleat is replaced. All joining is accomplished with large rectangular-headed nails.
