Small but richly decorated salvers such as this were produced in Baltimore as early as the 1820s.1 This example displays a variety of decorative techniques in its flat-chased wreath of foliage, ringed with a diapered surface and repousséd and chased floral band and tooled rim. The diminutive ball-and-claw feet add to the eclectic mixture of styles. The salver may have served in a front hall as a receiver for calling cards.

This text has been adapted from "Silver of the Americas, 1600-2000," edited by Jeannine Falino and Gerald W.R. Ward, published in 2008 by the MFA. Complete references can be found in that publication.

DescriptionThis circular salver sits on three cast ball-and-claw feet. A chased rim surrounds a border of repousséd and chased flowers and foliage. A reserve wreathed in foliage marks the center of a diaper-patterned ground.
