This plaster demonstrates an artist's working process. The vigorous handling of the plaster and the marks of the modeling tools suggest Rimmer's rapid speed when sketching in plaster or clay. The date of this male torso, 1877, coincides with the publication of the aritst's much-heralded treatise Art Anatomy, published while he was a professor of the School of the Museum of Fine Arts.
