ProvenanceBuhler Entry: Mary and Paul Dudley (see Cat. no. 367) were children of Epes Sargent (1690-1762) and his second wife, Catherine Winthrop (1711-1781), whose first marriage had been to Samuel Browne. It is interesting that for their daughter her maternal coat was used but not for her brother. When the bookplate was cut (Cat. no. 350) the first Epes Jr. (1721-1779) had officially lost that title. His son was Epes (1748-1822). Mary, baptized May 28, 1749, died at boarding school in the year that her teapot was made. Could it have been a gift to take to school?
