In recent years scholars have reattributed to Boston craftsmen many chairs once believed to have been made in Newport and New York. This example, however, still is attributed to Rhode Island and possibly to the shop of John Goddard. The carving of the feet and shell; the shape of the seat; and the pierced, vase-shaped splat (back) relate closely to those of documented Goddard furniture.
