This "hard times" token bears images of famous lawyer Daniel Webster and of "Constitution." On the reverse are the words: MILLIONS FOR DEFENCE NOT ONE CENT FOR TRIBUTE. Hard-times tokens were struck from about 1833 through 1843, serving as unofficial currency. Privately made, these tokens featured political and satirical themes and were used during a time of political and financial crisis in the United States.
