DescriptionThis papier-mâché mould (also known as a flong) was made from a zinc plate (MFA object number M8363). It is the fourth item in a suite of objects meant to illustrate the process of publishing a photograph in the daily newspaper. The full suite bear MFA object numbers M8361 - M8366.
In his catalogue to the 1892 "Exhibition Illustrating the Technical Methods of the Reproductive Arts," Sylvester Koehler described the process as follows: "The drawing, based upon a small instantaneous photograph, was finished by evening, the negative was made by 10.30 P. M., and the block was ready for the printer by 12.30 A.M., Nov. 22. It appeared in the Boston “Morning Herald,” of Nov. 22, 1891."
