DescriptionOn November 3, 1893, A. W. Elson and Co., who published this view of Johnston Gate, placed an notice in the Harvard Crimson, advertising for a salesman for the new print: "We want our photogravure of the Harvard Gate shown to every man in the University. We should like to arrange with some one in '97 or '98 to do this. A. W. ELSON & CO."
In other advertisements for the print, which descibed the image as "A Photogravure from Nature," the publisher noted that "The Remarque is an etching by Bicknell of the statue of John Harvard."
