ProvenancePossibly Giacomo Durazzo (b. 1717 - d. 1794), Genoa; possibly by descent to Jacopo Durazzo (d. around 1872), Genoa; November 19, 1872, posthumous Jacopo Durazzo sale, Gutekunst, Stuttgart, lot 134, sold for RM 10 (for the set of 39 prints), possibly to Gutekunst. [see note 1]. Henry Foster Sewall (b. 1816 - d. 1896; Lugt 1309), New York; 1896, by inheritance to his son, Charles Sewall (b. 1848 - d. 1898); 1897, sold by Charles Sewall to the MFA [see note 2]. (Acquisition Date: October 21, 1897)
NOTES:
[1] The prints bear no Durazzo marks, but the ledger of the Sewall Collection notes a Durazzo provenance for the set. The Durazzo sale catalogue includes a set that matches these prints exactly, including a description of the mounts and a note that the set is lacking one print, as does the Sewall set. The copy of the catalogued scanned for Art Sales Catalogue Online includes a notation that the lot may have sold to Gutekunst.
[2] Henry F. Sewall offered his collection to the MFA for purchase in 1888. That purchase was finalized and executed in 1897, one year after his death.
