With its many shallow drawers and adjustable top-which lifts and slides to form a drawing board-this portable chest clearly was made for an artist. Caroline Schetky Richardson, an early-nineteenth century miniature painter who worked in Philadelphia and Boston, used this box. The items displayed next to it were found inside-cakes of watercolor paint, tiny palettes, and unfinished miniatures still attached to the paper supports that made the ivories easier to handle.
