The poignant images Warhol used of the grieving widow of President John F. Kennedy were taken from those disseminated in the international media. He chose various pictures of Jacqueline Kennedy, including some taken at the President's funeral, and reproduced them on small canvases. While his other compositions feature a single image screened repeatedly on one canvas, Warhol assembled individual "Jackies" to create larger works. Reflecting the tragic sadness of the time, these paintings are in sharp contrast to Warhol's first portraits of a year earlier, which feature Warren Beatty, Troy Donahue, Elvis Presley, and Marilyn Monroe.
