Pettibone painted his versions of a "disaster" and a soup can very soon after Warhol finished his original compositions. These works are comparable to Warhol's in their use of mechanical reproduction and are truthful to the original palette, but are reduced in scale. The artist stated: "I'm not a miniaturist. All my works are done in actual size from reproductions of paintings or photographs." Pettibone's "Hyper-Pop" paintings were greeted with amusement when first exhibited in 1965, although their conceptual premise and inspiration to later generations who "appropriated," borrowed, and reworked art by others is widely recognized.
