Although this piece is painted, it appears as if either taken on expired film or manipulated in a dark room. Nelson’s evocative landscapes often straddle painting and photography. Here, the technique abstracts the scene, creating an environment that is nostalgic, undefined, and almost fantastical. Her painting simultaneously recalls a past and peers into a future that is untouched by the polluting effects of industry—a world where, in her own words, “humans don’t exist.”
