A silver birch tree springs from the mouth of the central figure, and upon its branches balance four blue-winged warbler birds which give this work its title. Rolling hills dance across the figure’s chin, while a four-leaf clover is pinned to its breast.
Bulkeley grew up in the Massachusetts Berkshires where his parents, both naturalists, tended to many wild animals when they were injured or orphaned. This painting shows Bulkeley’s commitment to care-filled interactions between humans and the natural world. Here, the human supports and respects nature materially and spiritually.
