[1] According to a letter from Johnny Van Haeften to the MFA (May 19, 2004), the painting belonged to a German Jewish family that emigrated to England in the mid-1930s, taking the painting with them. In 1984 the family sold the painting to Johnny Van Haeften through an intermediary.
