NOTES:
[1] According to a statement from Arthayer Sanborn, a friend of the Hopper family (August 24, 1976), the painting was “among a collection of early Hoppers which were owned by his mother and then his sister...Shortly before her death in 1965 she gave me these Hopper works,” which, until that time, had remained in the family’s house in Nyack. He also attested that he gave the portrait to his friends, the Brittains. [2] First lent to the MFA February 17- March 23, 1972. Brittain stated at the time the paintings were offered for sale that they had “been in our possession since 1969” and had been acquired from Arthayer Sanborn.
