5 April 64 (1964) 68.113 was a painting owned by the Lefebre Gallery (Lefebre Gallery 47 East 77th Street, New York, NY). The Lefebre Gallery offered to exchange one of two oil temperas from their gallery with the work by Julius Bissier, 3 Maerz 60 (1960) 66.439 in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. The Museum chose to exchange 3 Maerz 60 for 5 April 64 (1964). As 5 April 64 (1964) was worth more than the Bissier 3 Maerz 60 in the Museum's collection, the exchange was a partial; it required additional funds to purchase. These funds were provided by the Sophie M. Friedman Fund.

This exchange is documented in the correspondence found in the object file dating from November 28, 1967 to April 18, 1968. 5 April 64 (1964) 68.113 was accessioned on April 10, 1968.

The work 3 Maerz 60 (1960) 66.439 was acquired from the Institute of Contemporary Art (100 Newbury Street, Boston, MA) on September 21, 1966.
