Though she initially graduated as a painter in 1959, in the 1970s, Jane Sauer was influenced by feminist artists working in fiber and developed her own sculptural technique in waxed and knotted linen. She considered her works “closed basketry,” producing forms that invite us to imagine conjoined and vibrantly colorful bodily shapes. As the artist notes, “My artwork is the container for the tensions of my life,” embodied here in the interwoven fibers and the way they resemble lively shapes.
