Isabella Stewart Gardner’s husband Jack died unexpectedly in December of 1898. Her nephew, George Peabody Gardner (1855–1939), served as trustee of Jack’s estate and oversaw Isabella’s financial affairs while she built the nearby Fenway Court, now the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. Zorn presents Gardner as a stylish businessman paused during a round of billiards, highlighting his elegant cravat and three-piece suit, with a watch chain fastened across his vest.
