After working in Liverpool, London, Southampton, and along the Scottish coast, Salmon came to Boston in 1828. From 1831 to 1840, he kept a studio on the Marine Railway wharf on Commercial Street in Boston's North End, where he could witness the city's maritime activity. From his notes we know that this image of "Duncan" was painted on speculation in twelve days and was sold for thirty dollars (about six hundred dollars today).
