A popular subject for Hudson River School artists, Lake George combined natural beauty with a history steeped in Colonial events: it was the site of critical battles in both the Revolution and the French and Indian Wars. Durand, who promoted outdoor observation and sketching on site, emphasized here the details of the foreground rocks, trees, and scrub in an idealized view of Black Mountain and the Narrows.
