The marsh was great birding country, filled with geese, ducks, and other game fowl. Heade, a lifelong hunter, turned briefly to the subject in the early 1860s. In this painting, set against the expanse of the autumn marsh near Newbury, Massachusetts, he depicted two hunters with their dogs, taking a break from their sport.
