Based on their style, Stuart probably painted portraits of John and Catherine Amory (37.39) soon after he arrived in Boston. Amory already had retired from a successful career in a mercantile business. The Amorys were great-grandparents of Martha Codman Karolik; she and her husband Maxim Karolik were among the Museum's foremost donors. Several pieces of furniture by John and Thomas Seymour in this gallery descended from John Amory.
