DescriptionShirt with buttoning fold-down collar and lawn ruffle around front opening, re-inforced shoulders, sleeves gathered around arm holes, single shell button on each cuff (would have been folded back when worn), gussets under arms and at side slits.
ProvenanceLate 18th or 19th century, said to have belonged to Stephen Robbins (b. 1758 - d. 1847), Lexington, MA; passed by descent, probably to his son, Eli Robbins (b. 1786 - d. 1856), Lexington; to his daughter, Ellen Adelia Robbins Stone (b. 1817 - d. 1890), Lexington; to her daughter, Ellen A. Stone (b. 1854 - d. 1944), Lexington [see note]; 1899, gift of Ellen A. Stone to the MFA. (Accession Date: October 15, 1899)

NOTE: When the shirt was accessioned, it was said by the donor to have been worn by Stephen Robbins and passed to her by descent through the Robbins family.
