Description(Boston: G. W. Cottrell [1860]) 14.3 cm; 10, 95 pp. [lacking second pp. 3-4]; original publisher's color pictorial wrappers (gray pamphlet box).

Despite the 1833 copyright date, the later publication date is determined from the fact that the "History of the Goose Family" did not appear until 1860, being taken from an article in the Boston Transcript on January 14 of that year (information from American Antiquarian Society online catalogue); also Cottrell operated as an individual from 1856 to 1870. The AAS online catalogue lists several variants: the MFA copy has no advertisement on p. [96]; it does have an advertisement for "Good Books for Children" on the back wrapper. The front wrapper (titled "The Only True Mother Goose") is printed in blue and red, and the cover engraving is signed "Bricher-Russell Engravers." The latter two engravers operated as a partnership only in 1860. The internal engravings are reprinted from earlier editions and are variously signed and/or initialled.
ProvenanceInscribed in pen and blue ink front flyleaf "Dorothy Devlin"; blindstamp of "Tewksbury & Brother, Booksellers & Stationers, No. 1 Museum Building, Manchester, N.H."; Frank C. Doble, by whose estate given to MFA, October 10, 1973.
