The fishing village of Yport sits on a stretch of Normandy coast between Étretat and Fécamp that fascinated artists from Boudin to Courbet to Monet. Here Maufra captured the surface of the sea, pale green and sparkling in the early morning light, as fishing boats set sail for open waters. Writing to a friend in 1897, Maufra declared, "I seek the broad horizons, the skies!... I would like landscapes to be classic, simple, and immense."
