From 1825 to 1828, Corot lived abroad in Italy, where he produced numerous figure studies. Working with local Italian models, Corot often posed his subjects in unadorned interiors, rendering their homely features and modest costumes with tenderness and candor.

[see note 1]; May 26-28, 1875, posthumous Corot sale, Hôtel Drouot, Paris, lot 26, to Febvre (probably Alexis Joseph Febvre, Paris) for 750 fr. 1880, sold by Gustave Templelaere (dealer), Paris, to Henry Clay Angell (b. 1829 - d. 1911), Boston; 1911, by inheritance to his widow, Martha Bartlett Angell (b. 1833 - d. 1919), Boston; 1916, gift of Martha Bartlett Angell to the MFA; 1919, upon Mrs. Angell's death, accessioned fully by the MFA.
