DescriptionAfter central figures in Raphael's "Madonna of the Baldacchino," Galleria Palatina, Palazzo Pitti, Florence.
ProvenanceBy the 19th century, Tempi family, Florence [see note 1]; sold by Tempi family to Emilio Costantini (dealer), Florence; 1906, sold by Costantini to Robert Dawson Evans (b. 1843 - d. 1909) and his wife, Maria Antoinette Hunt Evans (b. 1845 - d. 1917), Boston [see note 2]; 1917, bequest of Mrs. Robert Dawson Evans to the MFA. (Accession Date: November 1, 1917)

NOTES:
[1] The painting was formerly attributed to Andrea del Sarto. In the MFA curatorial file are two statements signed by Emilio Costantini (June 1, 1906 and June 11, [probably 1906]), declaring that he had sold the picture to Robert Dawson Evans and "guaranteeing the said painting to be an original by Andrea del Sarto. The picture belonged to the Tempi family and was partially immersed during the flood of 1842; it was saved almost by miracle and was carefully conserved by the heirs of the said family who sold it to me" (taken from statement of June 1). [2] A letter from Mr. Hunt's agent (signature illegible) to Mr. Hunt (May 30, 1906) confirms the purchase of the painting from Costantini.
