DescriptionNoh theater robe for a male role (atsuita) with a green ground and overall design of peonies in light green, orange, pale blue, pale yellow and brown silk and undulating vertical lines (tatewaku) in white silk supplemental weft patterning. There is a reddish-orange plain-weave silk lining.
ProvenanceKuroda clan, Fukuoka, Japan. 1915, sold by Yamanaka and Co., New York, to the MFA for $7500 [see note]. (Accession Date: October 7, 1915)
NOTES:
Yamanaka's "Complete Set" of Noh Isho and Men dresses (accession nos. 15.1146 - 15.1164) were purchased as a group for $7500. This robe was no. 13 on the Yamanaka and Co. object list. William Sturgis Bigelow arranged the transaction and transport of the costumes on behalf of the MFA.
