DescriptionDark brown silk Noh theater robe with overall design of peonies on cypress fence in green, blue, light brown, purple, orange, white, pink and gold supplemental weft patterning with some later embroidery. There is a reddish-orange plain-weave silk lining.
ProvenanceKuroda of Fukuoka Collection. By 1915, Yamanaka & Co., New York; 1915, sold by Yamanaka to the MFA, through William Sturgis Bigelow, Boston, [see note 1] for $7500 [see note 2]. (Accession date: October 7, 1915)
