DescriptionTapering cylindrical body with three cast dolphin feet. Moulded base, rim, and applied mid-band. Handle cast in the form of a serpent with scrolled tail. The hinged, domed cover chased around the edge with a band of oval lobes and acanthus. Baluster finial, entwined dolphin thumbpiece. The front is engraved with a coat of arms, helm and crest within foliate scroll mantling.
Marks
Struck on rim by handle and on cover flange with hallmarks (leopard's head, lion passant, date letter for 1686-7) and with maker's mark of WI above a mullet in hear-shaped punch, possibly for William Jennings.
InscriptionsThe arms are those of Courthoppe, as borne by one of the two sons of Sir George Courthoppe (b. 1616): Geroge Courthoppe (1646-1714) or Edward Courthoppe (b. 1651).
