DescriptionOne of a pair (with 2001.53.2) of shell-shaped sauceboats with spiraling decoration on the sides. Rests on four ribbed scroll feet ending in quatrefoils. The handle in the form of a dolphin whose tail is entwined in a scroll that forms the lower part of the handle. The sides engraved with a circular coat of arms within a rococo cartouche.
Marks Struck under bases with hallmarks (leopard's head, lion passant, date letter for 1735-6) and with maker's mark of Paul de Lamerie.
InscriptionsSides engraved with the arms of Congreve impaling those of Stawell, as borne by Ralph Congreve (d. 1775).
