DescriptionSauceboat, one of a pair (with 2001.48.2) of oval shape with scalloped rim and standing on a spreading oval toot. Scroll handle. Sides have engraved decoration of diaper pattern, and a shell below the lip.
Marks Struck under base with hallmarks (lion's head erased, Britannia, date letter for 1729-30) and with maker's mark of Paul de Lamerie.
InscriptionsArms of Rudge impaling Reynardson, as borne by the Rev. Benjamin Rudge (b. 1684).
ProvenanceMade for the Reverend Benjamin Rudge (b. 1864). About 1929, with Crichton Bros. Ltd, London. December 12, 1930, sold by an anonymous owner at Christie's, London, lot 57. About 1980, S. J.
