DescriptionThe largest of a set of three casters (with 2001.47.2-3a-b). Octagonal baluster shape, on octagonal foot. High domed octagonal cover is pierced and engraved with alternating panels of diaper work and foliate scrolls, Engraved on one side with a coat of arms, and on the other side with the initials "AR".
Marks Struck under base with hallmarks (lion's head erased, Britannia, date letter for 1725-6) and with maker's mark of Paul de Lamerie; the cover of the larger caster with lion's head erased and maker's mark.
InscriptionsThe arms are those of the See of Oxford impaling those of Secker, as borne by Thomas Secker (1683-1768), Bishop of Oxford from 1738 to 1758. The initials are those of Archibald Phlip Primrose, 5th Earl of Rosebery (1847-1929)
