DescriptionOne of a pair (with 2001.33.2a-b). Octagonal with alternating straight and incurved sides, on spreading base of conforming outline. The lower part of the body has an applied mid-band with winged female masks with shells above. High domed cover pierced and engraved with alternating panels of diaperwork and scrolls and shells. Double-baluster finial. The side engraved with the royal arms within the Order of the Garter, flanked by the initials GR (George II).
Marks
Struck under bases with hallmarks (leopard's head, lion passant, date letter for 1727-8) and maker's mark Paul Crespin. On one of the casters, mark of Abraham Buteaux overstruck by Crespin mark.
InscriptionsThe royal arms are those borne by George II.
