Part One [of 48] in first edition of Picturesque America, from MFA's complete set in parts (1986.685-732). The parts were issued from June 1872 to 1874. Some of the material had first appeared in a series of articles in Appleton's Journal, beginning November 12, 1870. [See Sue Rainey, Creating Picturesque America: Monument to the Natural and Cultural Landscape (Nashville & London: Vanderbilt Univ. Press, 1994)]

The total edition has some 900 wood engravings and 49 steel engravings (the latter per the inserted "List of Engravings on Steel."
