Description(Paris: Rittner et Goupil; Lerebours; Hr Bossange, 1842) Oblong folio; title plus 47 plates; contemporary half gilt-stamped black morocco, purple-brown cloth boards (red cloth case).

Views of monuments, cities and landscapes in France. This volume contains 47 plates from a series compiled by Lerebours and published by him in partnership with Rittner et Goupil and Bossange; copies are known with as many as 114 plates. (MFA owns a two-volume set with 112 plates: 17.3409a-b) Lerebours chose the images from 2,000 available to him. This set contains only views in France; others depict scenes in Africa, the U.S., and elsewhere in Europe. All these views are taken from daguerreotypes--the process having been invented in 1839. One of the plates (no. [26]) is an example of the early photomechanical process invented by Fizeau, in which the actual daguerreotype plate was converted into an intaglio printing plate. Most of the remaining views were traced and copied onto new printing plates, in aquatint and etching. Six were traced and drawn on lithographic stones. Many of the views have added figures, as the original exposure times were too lengthy to capture movement (pl. [29] portrays a daguerreotypist taking a photograph). In addition to Lerebours, the Excursions was published by Rittner et Goupil (until 1840), Goupil & Vibert (1841-1846), and Bossange. However, the title for this volume contains Rittner and Goupil imprint and is dated 1842. Some plates have Rittner et Goupil imprint, some have Goupil & Vibert. This copy also does not contain the preface and interleaved descriptive texts sometimes found in the Excursions.
