Description(London: Thomas Roycroft, 1668) Folio; (Part One) 108 leaves, plus plates, (Part Two) 116 leaves, plus plates; contemporary gilt-stamped brown calf (rebacked).
Illustrations to fables. Second edition of Ogilby's version of Aesop's Fables--with the Hollar and Stoop illustrations--the first was 1665. It is surmised that much of that edition was lost in the great London fire, but the plates apparently survived. This copy also contains the first edition of his Aesopic's, largely composed by him, which also included Androcleus and the Ephesian Matron. Both parts were printed by Roycroft and are usually found bound together, as here (the last three titles have continuous pagination). This copy also has been extensively ruled in red ink throughout.
The Fables consists of 57 etchings by Hollar and 24 by Stoop; the Aesopic's has 24 by Hollar and 17 by Gaywood and others after designs by Barlow; Androcleus has 18 plates, some of which are by Gaywood after Barlow; and Ephesian Matron contains 10 plates by Hollar.
